The children in Year 4 at the school incorporated the entry as part of a school project, motivated by the need to make their environmental area accessible by all.
At present they have a fabulous environmental area, complete with a pond, which is used for studying plants, birds, insects and other wildlife. However, with narrow uneven paths, long grass and stinging nettles it was inaccessible to the disabled pupils. The children felt that, although this was a lovely place to be, they would prefer not to get stung and also thought it unfair that their disabled friends should be excluded from enjoying this space.

Dear Radio Hampshire
We are writing to tell you about how we need slabs for paths for our environmental area.
We need these for our disabled children to get around there easier. In addition, it will make it look nice for the school. We found out about this competition on the radio and are pleased to enter it to make our environmental area a better place for the children to go and study in there without getting hurt or stung. Our school is Fairisle Junior School and it is the best in Southampton. However, it is a real shame that the environmental area is not really accessible for all the children to study insects, the pond or plants in. There needs to be an improvement so that we can all learn safely MB

Dear radio Hampshire
We entered this competition so we can use the tiles for disabled children will be able to go into the garden and without the grass being to long we will really appreciate if you give Fairisle junior school the makeover on our environmental area.
The area has very long grass fore mini beasts , a pond to find things about under water animals like fish and newts and other animals , three benches, an oak tree to find out things about birds and squirrels and other animals and a dipping platform ......
.....I really hope you can help us make our wild life area more accessible for all our children.
Thank you for reading my letter

Dear Radio Hampshire and Elliots
Year 4 at Fairisle Junior School would like to enter your compaction to win a garden make over.
Our garden – or environmental area needs to have a path for the disabled children to pass, like a wheel chair.
Our Path is really narrow and stinging netals cover the grass. The grass has recently been cut, but the stinging netals are still there.......
....We study our plants and our pond life in our garden so we would like to be as enjoyable as possible.
Our pond is connected to a dipping board where we sit and study wild life and our water creatures.
Our Mini Beasts live in that long grass so we would like to sit on concrete and watch the mini beasts play and climb up the long stands of grass. Could we also have some benches to so sometimes if we are good we will might be able to eat our lunch outside. AC

To Elliots and Radio Hampshire
I am writing to you because we would like are school to have some paving slabs over near our pond and our environmental study centre and let the wild insect go into the long grass and hide behind the long grass.
We want some paving slabs so that our disabled children can go over to our area and see the lovely, pretty views in our school.
I heard about the competition on the radio. The school that we are in is Fairisle Junior School.
In the area it is very pretty, quiet and very lovely when the trees are blowing.
It is very lovely when the mini beasts are hiding in the big, long grass and the beautiful insects are flying in the blue, fresh air.We need the pond to study pond life. We need the trees to study birds. We need grounds for wild flowers.
So we need the paving slabs to be suitable for the wheel chairs to go over so we do not want the paving slabs to be bumpy.

Friday 5th September saw the Grand Opening of the garden and the reveal to the children. Hampshire cricketer Billy Taylor and retired Saints footballer Mark Dennis performed the official opening and cut the ribbon. Unfortunately it was rather wet on the day, but it didn't dampen the children's natural exuberance
