Gypsum Waste Regulations (April 2009)

From 1st April 2009 all gypsum waste, e.g. broken plasterboard and split bags of plaster must be stored in a separate container, not be mixed with other landfill waste and be sent for recycling or reuse.

The land filling of gypsum and other high sulphate-bearing wastes with biodegradable waste has been prohibited in England and Wales since July 2005. Up till now disposal of these substances was allowed where a mixed waste contains less than 10 per cent of gypsum or other high sulphate bearing waste. This working guideline will now be removed.

For details see www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/news/100510.aspx   Plaster that is stuck to brick or blockwork will continue to be classed as ‘rubble’.
