What is SUDS?
Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDS) is an alternative to conventional drainage. It aims to replicate the natural drainage pattern of a site before development by controlling flow rates, water volumes and minimising impact on watercourses.
Why consider SUDS?
- It can save you money
- It can reduce pollution
- It can help minimise the risk of flooding by infiltrating water back into the ground locally
- It’s environmentally friendly

Why has drainage become a problem in recent years? With growing urbanisation, the increase in hard landscaping has dramatically reduced the capacity for natural, sustainable drainage. This fact coupled with recent changes in rainfall patterns, means continuing growth in the volume of surface water run off that needs to be handled.
Action is needed now to make sure our systems are better designed to accommodate backlash from the extreme weather conditions. One way of doing this is to use sustainable drainage techniques such as permeable pavements, underground storage lagoons and specially designed roofs, which can help prevent drainage systems from becoming overloaded. For more information visit the Environment Agency website.

Hanson Formpave Aquaflow® Permeable Paving
Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) are increasingly being used to prevent run-off and flooding, and as a method of collecting and cleaning storm water.
The Formpave Stormwater Source Control System allows rain to infiltrate through a permeable concrete block paved surface into a unique stone sub-base where it is cleaned, by filtration and microbial action, before being released in a controlled manner into sewers or water courses, or infiltrated directly into the sub-grade. The water can also be harvested and used for nonpotable purposes such as watering plants and flushing toilets.
Aquaflow are permeable concrete paving blocks that can be used in conjunction with either tanked or infiltration systems and provide drainage through vertical channels.
- Used on hundreds of contracts worldwide
- Tested over 15 years
- Clean and controlled water discharge
- Water harvesting
- Retention of heavy metals
- Design service available
- BBA certification

The Polystorm soakaway system is a versatile, modern alternative to the traditional inefficient rubble-filled soakaway and can be used for either attenuation or infiltration of stormwater.
Soakaways of any size or shape are easily constructed on site from a number of lightweight, load bearing, modular cells. The structure can be configured to suit site constraints - it may be a narrow trench configuration at the edge of a small site, or a shallow construction beneath public open spaces. The entire structure is wrapped in a permeable geotextile to prevent silt migration.
Key Benefits
- 95% void ratio allowing greater storage and reduced excavation and disposal costs
- Modular units allow flexibility of shape - ideal for shallow excavation systems, narrow strips, or use in restricted areas
- Lightweight and easily assembled
- High surface permeability
Polystorm products are available from most Elliotts branches |
